During the first session on Wed. Nov. 18, Mr. Frank Zhang, business development manager for Bayer, presented “Meet Hygienic Requirements by 2K Waterborne Polyurethane Coatings.” This presentation included discussions on hygienic coatings for interior walls of food processing plants, kitchens, hospitals and schools. These coatings can achieve seamless application with excellent chemical resistance and easy clean up. These low VOC systems meet the high requirements for interior applications. The next session was, “Mild Solvent-Based Polyurethane for Flexible Food Packaging Safety,” presented by Dr. Paul Hönen, global industry manager for graphic arts at DSM NeoResins. Dr. Hönen introduced a wide rage of eco-friendly binders for food packaging applications. NeoRez U-471 is toulene- and ketone-free, suitable to replace conventional solvent systems. The last presentation in the Hygienic Coatings track was “Smart Packaging Solution for the Food Industry,” presented by Mr. Toshio Murakami, technical manager dispersions and pigments for BASF Japan. Mr. Murakami included information on BASF’s Joncryl DFC series smart packaging product line for direct food contact applications. It featured hands-on formulation tips for a variety of food applications. The only session in the Silicone Coatings track was titled “Silicone-Epoxy Hybrids: The Best of Two Worlds,” presented by Dr. Gaetano Blanda, business director Asia Pacific for Evonik Industries. Dr. Blanda layed out information on Silikopon EF silicone epoxy hybrid technology for corrosion protection. According to the talk, experts estimate that one-third of all iron and steel products manufactured worldwide in a year are used to replace corroded structural components. A matter of equal importance is sustainable corrosion protection. The primary focus here is on systems with high durability and a long lifespan, good color/gloss retention and stability, which combines commercial needs with environmental requirements.
